The Philadelphia 76ers was inducted into the League in 1955. They were known as the Syracuse Nationals and during their beginning years, they were based in New York . The team moved to Philadelphia in 1963, and came to be known as the Philadelphia 76ers.
There is an interesting story behind their franchise name. The name was the winning entry of a naming contest. The name 76ers has a direct link to the American history. The Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia in the year 1776. Walter Stalberg chose the historically significant, winning name for the team.
The Present
As the millennia dawned, the Philadelphia 76ers saw many changes within the team.
In 2001, Allen Iverson led the team to the Finals which proved unsuccessful. However, Iverson was named the Most Valuable Player.
In 2010, Doug Collins became the new head coach of the Sixers. The same year they picked out Evan Turner . In 2008, the Sixers signed Elton Brand. The team is now led by Andre Iguodala .
The Sixers started the 2010 season with an insipid 3-13, but things turned around pretty soon. They won 38 of the last 66 games and finished with a 41-41 record. The 76ers also got to the playoffs, their 3 rd playoff within the last 4 years.
