Golden State led 29-23 after one quarter and increased the lead to 10 points early in the second quarter. The Clippers battled back and Paul hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to conclude a 12-0 surge that gave Los Angeles a 38-35 advantage with 7:26 left in the half.

The Warriors responded with an 11-3 run, taking a five-point lead on a hoop by Ellis with 3:35 remaining. The game was tied 56-56 at halftime.

Paul had 20 points in the first half and Ellis had 18.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Udoh reached double figures for the third time this season and made his first start of the campaign because Andris Biedrins missed the game with flu-like symptoms. … Williams has made seven 3-pointers in a game three times in his eight-year career. … Golden State forward Dorell Wright was scoreless for the second straight game and has missed 13 shots in the two contests. … The Clippers committed 17 turnovers to Golden State’s nine.

San Antonio 103 LA Clippers 100

February 19th, 2012

SPURS 103, CLIPPERS 100 (OT): Recap of the Spurs Vs Clippers game:

Gary Neal hit the game-tying 3-pointer late in regulation and added a back-breaking 3 in extra time as visiting San Antonio ran its winning streak to 10 games Saturday afternoon.

A pair of Chris Paul free throws represented the lone offense through the opening 2:52 of the extra session. Matt Bonner sent the Spurs in front with a 3-pointer, but Blake Griffin drew a foul with 42 seconds left and connected on one of two foul shots to draw the Clippers even.

On the ensuing San Antonio posession, Neal gathered a Tim Duncan pass and buried a 3-pointer to give the Spurs the lead for good. Paul whiffed on a layup at the other end, San Antonio recovered the rebound and Tony Parker hit two free throws to put the game away.

Parker finished with 30 points and 10 assists for the Spurs, who improved to 6-0 on their annual rodeo road trip. Duncan added 11 points and 17 rebounds.

Griffin led the way with 22 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for the Clippers. Paul and Randy Foye poured in 21 points apiece.

Trailing by one with 32 seconds left, Parker was fouled and made both shots to put the Spurs back ahead. Paul returned the favor on the Clippers’ next possession to restore the L.A. lead, and Duncan missed a layup at the other end that would have given San Antonio the edge.

The Clippers regained possession and Paul knocked down a pair of free throws for a three-point lead. The teams exchanged turnovers in the final 10 seconds, giving the Spurs a chance for the tie – and Neal made good, knocking down a 25-footer with five seconds remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Antonio finished with seven blocked shots while the Clippers didn’t register any. Los Angeles came into the game ranked eighth in the NBA in blocks per game (5.4). … The Spurs won despite shooting just 11 for 21 from the free-throw line. The Clippers went 20 for 23. … All five of Neal’s field goals came from beyond the arc.

Analysis of the San Antonio Spurs:

Like most years, the Spurs are quietly letting the league know that they’re one of the best teams of the year, already 21-9 and 1st in their division. Behind the veteran leadership of PG Tony Parker, C Tim Duncan, and SG Manu Ginobli, the Spurs are in great shape to make another deep playoff run this year. The only worry for this team is age, as all of their core players are in range to retire sooner rather than later.

Analysis of the Los Angeles Clippers:

Looking at the Spurs, if you were to try and find a team with the exact opposite qualifications as them you’d probably see the Clippers. The Spurs quietly win while the Clippers are loudly letting everyone know they’ve arrived on the scene. The Spurs pride themselves on a tough defense, the Clippers on an unstoppable offense. The Spurs have experience on their side, the Clippers more talent. Despite these differences, the results for both are very similar; the Clippers are 19-9 and 1st in their division as well.

Key players to watch:

San Antonio Spurs: Manu Ginobli

Ginobli will get an interesting matchup against fellow established G Chauncey Billups. Both are two of the more respected veterans in the league and both pride themselves on both their offensive and defensive abilities. Ginobli will have to show up and shut down Billups for the Spurs to come out of LA with a W.

Los Angeles Clippers: Blake Griffin

PF Blake Griffin presents a matchup problem for the Spurs. They don’t have a true big man to matchup with him really (Duncan will probably cover C DeAndre Jordan) and rookie SF Kawhi Leonard may be their best option. Griffin always comes to play, but if he gets put up against an undersized rookie then expect him to go off for close to 30 points.

Key statistic: turnovers

These teams are two of the best at limiting their turnovers in every game. The both only turn the ball over about 14 times each game, putting them each in the top 5 in the league. The team that can either improve on this statistic or force more on their opponent’s end will be the one to come out victorious.

Prediction:

As outlined, these teams are very different yet very effective. On a Saturday afternoon in LA, not televised, I think it favors the Spurs style of play: quietly shutting down their opponent and leaving the league to think come May, “Wow, did they really play that well this season?” This game will just add to that feeling.

Prediction = San Antonio Spurs: 89 – Los Angeles Clippers: 80

Recap LA Clippers Portland Trail Blazers

February 18th, 2012

Recap: LA Clippers-Portland Trail Blazers

Tonight, on the national stage, with the great Marv Albert calling play by play, the Clippers took on conference rival Portland Trailblazers. It was an opportunity for the Clippers to go on the road with the whole country watching to show that they are the real deal. They opened the game playing by far their worst half of basketball of the year, and found themselves down by as many as 18 points in the game. In spite of the slow start, the Clippers managed to come all the way back and win this game. Winning ugly is still winning, and the Clippers may very well have shown just how real they are. The box score is here for anyone who missed it. More after the Jump.

After an uninspired first quarter, the Clippers found themselves down 27-20, and were torched by Nicolas Batum for 15 points on 6-7 shooting. Batum hit a few good shots from outside, but also had at least 6 points on uncontested layups on back cuts. With Deandre Jordan picking up two quick fouls, the Clippers got some good minutes off the bench from Kenyon Martin, with 2 impressive offensive rebound putbacks. I can’t say enough about how impressed I have been with Martin since signing with the Clips. The guy has a high basketball IQ, much higher than I ever game him credit for, and he really moves his feet well on defense. On top of that, he still has a surprising amount of athleticism left considering his knee operations and age.

During the second quarter, it became increasingly obvious that the Clippers were flat in this game. The offense was stagnant, with no sign of the great ball movement that the Clippers have shown flashes of in recent weeks. On top of that, the Clippers continued their trend of poor execution out of timeouts, which has not been good at all this season. While the Blazers were shorthanded with Lamarcus Aldridge injured, they remain a team of very long defenders, and they bothered the Clippers 3 guard lineup throughout this contest. The Clippers only managed 32 points in the half, but were able to cut the lead to just 11 at the break.

The start of the 3rd quarter did not magically make things better for the Clippers, they opened the quarter looking just as flat, and things started to get ugly. The Clippers found themselves down by as many as 18, and it seemed as though the game was turning into a throw away.

To begin the fourth quarter, Chris Paul was yet to score, and the Clippers were yet to hit a 3. Anyone who has watched this team play this year knows that that is a recipe for disaster. There is a direct correlation to Chris Paul scoring and Clipper Victories, and the Clippers have definitely been dependent on making threes to win games. In the past, this was the type of games the Clippers would never win. This was followed up by a Chris Paul 3, capping a 12-2 run and breaking the back of the Blazers. Chris Paul had 13 points (all in the fourth) and showed once again why he is a superstar. He refused to let the Clippers lose this game, and bounced back from a miserable performance through 3 quarters.

His presence on this roster is absolutely invaluable. Numbers don’t always tell the whole story, Chris Paul should definitely be a candidate for MVP.

The Clippers had no business winning that game, but pulled it out. Ugly as it was, it’s a great win for this club, and the country should take notice. The Clippers are the real deal.

 Final Thoughts

Free Throws. After shooting just 3 in the first half, the Clippers wound up shooting 19 free throws. They made just 12, but luckily Portland shot just about the same, going 11/18. The Clippers payed more aggressive in the second half and it paid off. Another good sign- Blake was 3-4 tonight, and the release looked much more fluid and natural.

Randy Foye and the 2 guard spot: Randy was just 3-12 tonight and did not shoot a free throw. I really like Foye, and I think hes a very capable basketball player, but he has got to be more productive for this club. He missed a number of open looks again tonight and had some bad forced shots as well. JR SMITH…New York Knicks? Really? It’s not too late…

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Portland Trailblazers

February 15th, 2012

Los Angeles Clippers vs. Portland Trailblazers

NBA / Western Conference

Rose Garden, Portland, OR

Thursday, February 16th, 2012. 10:30 PM EST

Analysis of the Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers lost a heartbreaker to the Mavericks in Dallas to conclude their long 6-game road streak just a few days ago. Outside of that, there has been little to complain about in LA this year. The Clips, led by All-Stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, have roared out to a 17-9 start behind a fantastic offense and are looking to make the playoffs (and go deep in them) for the first time in a while.

Analysis of the Portland Trailblazers

The Trailblazers came into this season with high hopes after doing well last season (going 48-34 before losing to the eventual champion Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs) and making a key offseason acquisition of SF/PF Gerald Wallace. Unfortunately the start of this year hasn’t gone the way that the Blazers have wanted it to, sputtering out to a 15-14 start. A bright spot has been All-Star PF Lamarcus Aldridge though as he is averaging 23 points a night and is putting up great rebound numbers as well.

Key Players

Los Angeles Clippers: Blake Griffin

One of the younger superstars of the league, Griffin has wowed crows with his high-flying dunks for a little over a year now. He puts up great numbers also, averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds a game. A tough matchup with fellow PF Aldridge awaits, but if Griffin can overcome Aldridge’s great defense then the Clippers will come out victorious.

Portland Trailblazers: Jamal Crawford

Crawford, who has to be a candidate for 6th man of the year, scores. It’s what he does best and it’s what the Trailblazers rely on him to do. He’ll have a favorable matchup against SG Randy Foye of the Clippers for most of the night, and against the Clippers defense Crawford could explode for 20-25 points. If he does this the Trailbalzers will be tough to beat on Thursday.

Key Statistics

Free Throw Percentage:

As outlined above, arguably the two best players on the court will be power forwards. Both will try and go to the line, where the Trailblazers do very well (shooting almost 79%, 5th best in the NBA) and the Clippers don’t do well at all (shooting only 68%, 2nd worst in the NBA). The Trailblazers will have to take advantage of this if they want to upset the Clippers at home.

Prediction

The Clippers lost that heartbreaker on Monday night and are going to look to make up for it over the course of the next week. The Trailblazers will definitely recognize that this game is a big one, but I don’t think that even a nationally-televised audience as well as a home game will be enough to stop an angry “Lob City” squad from destroying the Trailblazers.

Prediction = Los Angeles Clippers: 99 – Portland Trailblazers: 84

The Wizards are 5-7 under coach Randy Wittman, who replaced Flip Saunders after an awful 2-15 start. They also have won three of their last five games.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (17-9):
Caron Butler said he was caught up in the pregame ceremony when he received his 2011 championship ring from Dallas before Monday’s game. “I was very emotional. Mavericks Vs Clippers Recap

February 14th, 2012

Led by 11 Dirk Nowitzki points in the final six minutes of the game the Dallas Mavericks outlasted the Los Angeles Clippers Monday night in Dallas by a final score of 96-92.  Dirk has a subpar night for his standards up until the last six minutes when he turned his game into high gear as he is prone to doing.  He ended up with 22 points for the game.

Outside of the go-to-guy, Nowitzki, there were four other Mavericks who contributed double-digit scoring efforts in the win.  Shawn Marion ended the game with 16 and the trio of Jason Terry, Brendan Haywood, and Vince Carter tallied 10 points a piece.

The Clippers were led by Caron Butler’s season-high 23 points as his inspired performance can be attributed to the emotions he felt during a pregame ceremony in which he was given his NBA Championship ring he earned last year while a member of the Mavericks.  Chris Paul, the Clippers dynamic point guard, chipped with 16 points while dishing out 9 assists.

The game really came down to Nowitzki from an offensive standpoint and the stellar team defense of the Mavericks in the 4th quarter.  They caused seven turnovers and held the explosive Clippers to just 5 for 15 shooting in the final stanza.  The quarter was highlighted also by a 7-0 Dallas Mavericks run that culminated in a Shawn Marion layup with 4:48 left that gave the home team a 86-83 lead.  A lead they would secure on the road to a victory.

It is also of note to mention that the Clippers have not beaten the Mavericks at home since April 19, 2006.

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday with the Mavericks heading to Denver to take on the Nuggets and the Clippers will now continue their road trip with a game in Washington against the dreadful Washington Wizards which will also take place on Wednesday night.

Clippers play the Dallas Mavericks again on April 2 at the American Airlines Center you can puchase Mavericks Vs Clippers Tickets for that game now. The Clippers have another big battle this week at the Los Angeles Staples Center when they face the San Antionio Spurs. Spurs Vs Clippers Tickets will sell out soon, get them while you can.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (15-8)
: Randy Foye drew the start Wednesday against Cleveland in Los Angeles’ first game without Chauncey Billups (Achilles’ tendon). Foye scored 15 points and has reached double digits in five of his seven starts this season.
