They never reached the playoffs as a Canadian franchise. Their only consolation was the acquisition of Shareef Abdur-Rahim in 1996.
The team continued their losing spree and the financial loses forced the owner Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment think of selling the franchise. Attempt to sell to Bill Laurie failed and the team ended up with Michael Heisley as their new owner, at Memphis, Tennessee , USA and became The Memphis Grizzlies in 2001. They now play from their home turf the FedEx Forum .
The 2000s as the Memphis Grizzlies
In 2001 Pau Gasol was acquired by the team. Shane Battier who also joined the team the same year was a crowd favorite. These two players put the Memphis Grizzlies back on the League radar. Rudy Gay was also bought in the 2006 season; he proved to be a valuable player later on.
From 2008 onwards, the team was led by many key figures. The acquisition of Zach Randolph is perhaps the best thing that happened to the Grizzlies. The Gay – Randolph duo displayed some brilliant performances.
The 2010–11 season saw some great performances and some trades. They acquired forward Shane Battier and guard Ishmael Smith . The Grizzlies reached the 2011 playoffs.
It was a season of several firsts for the Memphis Grizzlies. The team won their first playoff against the top seeded San Antonio Spurs . It was their first home playoff win. They also won the playoff series, defeating the Spurs all over again. It was also the first time in the NBA history that a first seeded team was defeated by an eight-seeded team. However all the record moves stumbled with their defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
