Kings vs Clippers
The Sacramento Kings are a member of the Western Conference of NBA, the only team in the "big four" that is located in Sacramento . The Kings play their home games at the Power Balance Pavilion.
The Sacramento Kings, as we know them today, are the result of a series of acquisitions, relocations and renaming.
With their entry into the basketball world in the 1920's the Sacramento Kings sure have played some good basketball. In 1946, they won the National Basketball League championship. The Kings also became the NBA champions in 1951. They have also won a conference championship and five division championships since 1945.
The many moves of the Sacramento Kings
The Kings had a humble beginning as a local semi-professional team. When they began in the early 1920s, they were based in Rochester, New York . They are among the oldest basketball clubs in the history of the game.
The Sacramento Kings were initially known as the Rochester Royals when they joined the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1945. They also became members of the newly formed NBA as the NBL and BAA merged in 1949. The team remained Rochester Royals till 1957.
They were tremendously successful on court and played many brilliant games. Nevertheless, when it came to making profit the franchise soon found itself in serious trouble. Their city Rochester was comparatively small, so the local market was not big enough for the franchise to be making money. So they shifted to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1957. They became and remained Cincinnati Royals till 1972.
In 1972, they relocated again to Kansas City, Missouri . They had a brief stint there, and during the time, they were called the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. Until 1975, the Kings split their games between Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska . For about a decade starting 1975, they were called the Kansas City Kings. Following their unsuccessful attempts to make profit even in Kansas City , they were relocated one last time to Sacramento in 1985. And since then, they have remained the Sacramento Kings.
Believe it or not, the location and ownership of the Sacremento Kings are still under discussion. There were many rumors about the possibility of the team being relocated to Anaheim . It was also confirmed later by the NBA commissioner David Stern that there have been some discussions between the Kings and the Anaheim officials about the move.
However, in a surprise move the Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson announced that the Sacramento has received support from the billionaire Ron Burkle . Fans breathed a sigh of relief, since the Kings will now remain in Sacramento . It is now confirmed that the Sacramento Royals will stay where they are at least for the 2011-12 NBA season .
