Lakers vs Clippers
Look out for the Los Angeles Lakers this season. The Lakers are one of the most popular and successful franchises in the NBA history, with 16 championship titles to their credit. They top the Forbes list as the second most valuable NBA Franchise as of 2011.
The Lakers story
The Los Angeles Lakers, as we know them now, were actually the disbanded Detroit Gems of NBL. They became a franchise in 1947 and began at Minneapolis, Minnesota as their home base. The name Lakers was in honor of their first home, after the nickname of the state "Land of 10,000 Lakes."
At Minnesota , they had the talented center George Mikan in their team and won five championships. However, tragedy struck in the late 1950s. The retirement of George Mikan coupled with financial difficulties forced the Lakers to relocate to Los Angeles .
The scorching sixties
The Los Angeles Lakers set the court on fire during the 1960s. They made it to the finals six times in the 1960s, though they lost each series to Boston . The team then acquired Elgin Baylor and Jerry West who led them to many wins.
Seventies with Wilt the Silt
In 1968, the Lakers acquired the supremely talented “Wilt the Silt”, Wilt Chamberlain . In 1972, the Lakers won the championship, their first title as the Los Angeles Lakers. They were under the new head coach Bill Sharman then. During the 1970s, they acquired yet another center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar .
The "Showtime" Lakers
The 1980's saw the Lakers winning five championship titles within a span of nine years. They had many future Hall of Famers in the team – Magic Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy as the key players and Pat Riley , a Hall of Fame coach. The fast break offence displayed by the team with Magic Johnson at the helm earned them the nickname “Showtime.”
The silent nineties
Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson retired and team had to struggle a bit through the early 90's. With Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant coming into the team, the Lakers regained their vigor.
The shimmering 2000s
With O'Neal and Bryant, and the Hall of Fame coach, Phil Jackson , the Lakers won consecutive championship titles in from 2000 to 2002, gaining their first “three-peat.” In 2009 and 2010 they beat Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics respectively.
