The story of the Orlando Magic
Orlando Magic was one among the four expansion teams to come into the league during 1988 and 1989. They were founded in 1989, and even as a pretty young franchise, Magic proved to be one of the most successful teams. They have made it to the playoffs 13 times in a span of 22 years playing for the league. They have also had the most successful winning percentages among all expansion teams.
As on 2011, they represent the city of Orlando as one among the “big four" sports leagues.
Shaq and Penny – 1992-‘96
The Orlando Magic history is incomplete without talking about the magical times during '92-96. They drafted Shaquille O'Neal and became the most improved franchise of NBA, improving by 20 games. O'Neal became the first rookie since Michael Jordan to be voted an All Star.
Penny Hardaway was drafted into the team in 1993 and with the Penny Shaq duo, the Orlando Magic became a dominant team in the NBA. They compiled the first 50 win season in the franchise history and also reached the playoffs for the first time.
In the 1994-95 season, All Star forward was acquired from the Chicago Bulls as a free agent. In the playoffs for the season, Magic beat the Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers, and advanced to the NBA finals. During the finals though, the Houston Rockets won.
The home arena
When they were founded, the team made the Orlando Arena their home. The Arena has been renamed a few times, but it still remains the home court of the Orlando Magic. In 1999, it became the TD Waterhouse Center. In 2006, the naming rights were purchased by Amway and now it is known as the Amway Arena.
The Orlando Magic are scheduled to host the 2012 NBA All-Star Game. They have updated their logo, uniforms and colors.
The Magic also made some notable trades in the last three seasons. They signed some brilliant players like Quentin Richardson , Chris Duhon , Hedo Türkoglu and 3 time All Star Gilbert Arenas .
