The Mavs have had a great history ever since their induction as an NBA Franchise, with three division titles, two conference championships and one NBA championship. The Mavs play their home games at the American Airlines Center.
They were part of the League in the 1980's. The team was formed as a result of the efforts of businesspersons Don Carter and Norm Sonju who wanted to bring a basketball franchise to Dallas, Texas.
The Dallas Mavericks were established in 1980 with the league owners voting for the new team at the NBA All Star Game. The name Mavericks was the popular choice after the 1957- 1962 TV Western “Maverick.”
Dick Motta with an illustrious record in the league was hired as Game Head Coach. Big names such as Kiki Vandeweghe , Rolando Blackman , Brad Davis , Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper and Sam Perkins were also part of the team in the 80's. Under the able leadership of Mark Aguirre the Mavericks displayed some dazzling performances.
The Mavs “Dark Ages”
The 1990's were bad for the Mavs with many setbacks like Roy Tarpley 's drug abuse, many injuries and their strict disciplinarian coach Quinn Buckner. The one positive during the time was the performance of the 3 J's Jason Kidd , Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn .
The return of the Mavs
With the emergence of the “big three” Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Steve Nash, the Mavericks were back in the game during the 2000s. With Mark Cuban as the new owner and Don Nelson as the head coach they reached the playoffs in 2001 and the Finals in 2003. With the disbanding of the trio in 2004 the Mavs were again off the limelight.
However, with Nowitzki as the team leader and Avery Johnson as the coach, they appeared for the NBA Finals in 2006. That was their best season ever with 67 games in 2006-07. With the return of Kidd and a coach like Rick Carlisle they have reigned through the decade.
The best of the Mavs
It was deja vu in 2011. They reached the finals for a second time. This time, repeating the 2006 finals against Miami Heat. Fortune favored the Dallas Mavericks and they won the title winning it for the first time in their 31-year history.
