They were named Pistons after their founder owners Fred Zollner and his sister Janet's Zollner, who owned the Zollner Corporation, a foundry manufacturing pistons .

They could not repeat their inspiring performance the next year. The 2004-2005 season saw many setbacks for the team. Pacers–Pistons brawl and the issues with Larry Brown are among the few. They hired a new coach Flip Saunders that season.
