The Washington Wizards have gone through quite a number of relocations and renaming. They entered the League in 1961 as Chicago Packers. Within a year, they changed their name to Chicago Zephyrs. They remained Zephyrs for just one year.
Their first relocation was to Baltimore , Maryland where they called themselves the Baltimore Bullets. This stint lasted quite a while, till 1973. With players like Bailey Howell , Don Ohl , Bob Ferry and Wali Jones , they reached their first playoff in 1965. However, the Bullets lost the finals to Los Angeles Lakers. .
Their next relocation was in the year 1973. They briefly shifted to Landover , Maryland calling themselves the Capital Bullets. This move and name change also lasted for just a year. The very next season, they changed their name again to Washington Bullets and remained so till 1997.
The season 1977-78 is popularly known as the miracle season for the Washington Bullets. They won the NBA Championships, the first time for any Washington D.C. sports team, in 36 years.
In the year 1997, the Bullets became the Wizards. Along with the name change, they also changed their colors and shifted their arena to the Verizon Center . However, there have been no improvements in the game front.
The Michael Jordan effect
For a brief period, from 2001 to 2003, after his retirement from Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan became the President of the Washington Wizards and even returned to play for the Wizards for the love of the game. His presence in the team had a deep impact on the Wizards. Due to injuries, Jordan had to step down, but he holds the record for playing all the 82 matches in the 2002-03 season. Polin, the majority stakeholder of the Wizards, fired Jordan from the post of the franchise President.
Jordan 's presence did wonders for the team morale and positively influenced even future performances. Nevertheless, the team suffered a bad stint for two years (2008-2010) even with Flip Saunders as their new coach.
